Women need power, not flowers this Valentines Day
Political consultant and columnist Alexis Grenell explains how small donor public election financing empowers women to seek public office. By electing more women, we can work toward a democracy that is representative of both men’s and women’s interests.
When New York City implemented a public financing system, the doors opened to women and minorities but also to anyone without a deep network of political donors and power brokers. By magnifying the impact of small donors with very modest investment of public funds, the individual voter once again has power.
Our democracy is currently built to serve men’s interests. We see this reflected in various ways not the least of which is the clear and persistent wage gap between men and women. For every $1 earned by a man, women are paid an average of .79 for the same work.
To focus attention on this inequity, MAYDAY.US discounted all women’s gear to 79% of the unisex price. Click here to browse our gear shop and show your support for small donor financing of elections.
