Lawrence Lessig’s email announcing the plan for 2015
Today, Lawrence Lessig sent this email to citizens announcing the plan to start closing the gap for fundamental reform before next year’s Congressional elections. The platform for action is at http://mayday.us.
“What if I were to tell you that today we stand only 70 people away from a majority in the House who are committed to fundamental reform in the way campaigns are funded? To some that sounds daunting. I see hope — when 96% of America is already on our side, what’s 70 more people? If we can convince 70 people, then we can convince America that fundamental reform is possible.
So for the rest of 2015, that’s exactly what MAYDAY is going to try to do. We are going to rally the most effective, targeted citizen lobbying campaign we can to close the gap on reform.
We’re optimistic, but we’re not unrealistic. We won’t have all 70 with us by the end of this year. But our hope is to identify enough leaders in Congress to close the gap enough this year so that by 2016 we’re in striking distance of having a pro-reform majority in Congress.
How? We need your help. Not your money, but your time.
Six weeks ago we asked you to identify potential leaders in Congress. Hundreds of you responded with nominations. We studied the list, and we agree that 47 of your nominations could be the key to unlocking a pro-reform Congress in 2016.
So here’s the ask: There are many ways to get involved in this campaign at MAYDAY.US. Can you click here and do just one thing to help us recruit the 47?
This won’t be easy, obviously. Nothing that involves Congress is easy.
But by calling on representatives to stand up as leaders, we are showing them respect. We are, as Miss Maudie said in To Kill A Mockingbird, “paying the highest tribute we can pay a man. We trust him to do right. It’s that simple.”
It is that simple. We are asking our leaders to be exactly what this Nation needs now — a force for change, for the good of everyone.
Help us to help them to lead.
