WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Mayday PAC (MAYDAY.US) CEO and Board Chair Zephyr Teachout commented on Secretary Hillary Clinton’s calling for the public funding of elections.
“Wow. Today, something huge - and surprising - happened. For over 30 years of her political life, Secretary Clinton rarely talked about public financing of elections. But today, she flipped from decades of being non-committal and came out supporting fundamental reform. We are appreciative – and applaud – her support. Why did she flip? Because of millions of angry Americans who wouldn’t take anything less, because of Sanders, Lessig, and O'Malley repeating the public financing drumbeat, and because she saw the writing on the wall if she didn’t demand REAL structural change. Now, those who believe in fundamental reform need to push candidates across the country to realize they have to support public financing because it’s a political issue with a huge, angry grassroots movement power behind it. Words are the first step, and we will now work to keep those words alive on the campaign trail and hold feet to the fire.”
