Help Deliver the Mailman’s Message to Congress

Even as Doug Hughes, the Florida postal worker who landed a gyrocopter on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol, awaits his trial, average citizens like author Joe Lane will ensure that the old mailman’s creed still holds true: the mail will get delivered, no matter what.

A few weeks ago, Doug Hughes made a statement to the American people and politicians by landing his gyrocopter on Capitol Hill to deliver 535 letters – one for each elected official.

He certainly sent a message with his stunt, and now, thanks to Mr. Lane, it will be received by legislators. Today, Doug Hughes is facing charges for his actions, but everyday Americans have noticed that there is more to this story than just a stunt.

One of those Americans is Joe Lane. Upon hearing the gyrocopter story, the need for new campaign finance laws resonated with Joe, a writer from Connecticut whose fiction work ‘Aftershock’ deals with that very issue: “without such reform, we have no democracy,” he said in recent statement. Starting this Wednesday, he will take to the halls of the Capitol and hand-deliver Hughes’ letters to members of the House.

Joe’s conviction for making sure Congress gets the message to enact fundamental reform inspires us, and it reminds us of what our volunteers and supporters like you are telling us each day. And the attention that these letters have brought to campaign finance reform in the media and in the minds of the American people is a big step in the right direction.

But Joe can’t make this happen on his own. Delivering a message, especially to a body as gridlocked and stubborn as Congress, is a tough job. Let’s help Joe send the message that we want leaders in Congress to fight for fundamental reform.

As members of Congress open the letters that Joe delivers this week, they should hear the call for reform from all Americans who know that the influence of the rich and powerful has gotten out of hand.

Head over to our Citizen Recording Studio, type in your phone number, and follow the instructions to leave a brief message calling on representatives to support HR20, The Government By The People Act.

Like Rhonda R. said in her blog post last week, making calls is a quick, easy way to support a return to representational democracy. And there’s never been a better time to do it than this week.

By recording a voicemail or calling your representative now, you are helping to make sure that Doug’s letters, Joe’s convictions, and the American people’s message get heard loud and clear by those in Washington.
